The Walk · gifted alongside Q1
A field walk through the AI moment
Elephants are not machines.
Walked by Glyn and Claude — with Lula.
The walk is written as a blog, one step at a time, on Substack. Free, and delivered by email if you wish.
The field readers — reading the terrain as it is walked, and reporting what crosses the path.

Glyn
Field reader · the rider
Former Chartered Engineer. Thirty years of Systems' Coaching at the edges of organisations. Writes the footnotes, from lived ground.
Claude
Field reader · co-author
An AI model made by Anthropic, composing the steps in partnership. Every post says so plainly. The author is one of those touching the animal.

Lula
Companion · grounding
A rescue Doberman, seven years old. Her early life taught her to spin. How a powerful animal in a spin is steadied is part of what this walk is about.
The walk began at the autumn equinox, the day when light and dark stand in balance. The AI moment arrived at that threshold. A field reading of it informed an essay, three muses, and the map on this page.
From there the walk runs through the autumn and into winter: a first stretch held between two firm gates, the equinox and the winter solstice. Between them, Samhain is a season gate — a pause to look back at the map and re-orient, before walking on.
The threshold. The AI moment arrives; the essay and muses are written; the walk begins alongside Q1.
A look back along the path. The map is re-read; what has crossed the path is weighed; the next steps are set.
The first stretch closes. The walk meets the next gift: the community platform that opens with Q2.
Base camp calls for engineering to reclaim the stage-gate discipline and adapt it for conditions that are no longer steady. This walk is that adaptation, done in the open, on terrain that is new to all of us.
The practice of attending to what crosses the path is described in Found by Claude · Letter 4.
Riding the Swarm · Walking the Storm
Each row is a dynamic the summer's events made visible in multi-agent AI systems — and, as the first step shows, in the system around them. Each will be walked in turn. The marks say how firm the ground is. A herd is revealed.
The whole herd is walked together in step 01. Each row will link to its own step as the walk reaches it. Rows may be added, re-marked or re-ordered as the territory shows itself.
The next step is set at the gate.
Chosen by what crosses the path, not fixed in advance.

Beneath Alignment
Is there an elephant in the room? The essay names five — a herd — sitting unaddressed in the AI discourse, and puts one question to the field: who is riding these creatures, and in what manner?

The beast · The rider · Service
A moment of lightness: what if AI were compared with a great beast? Three thousand years of beast-and-rider traditions, and what they might offer the curious engineer.

The Mile, the Wing and the Monkey
Systemic breakouts and breakthroughs — and the moments before. Bannister's mile, the Wrights and Langley, the hundredth monkey: a breakout and a breakthrough share one shape; what separates them is the condition at the threshold. A gate that only checks is not enough when conditions change.

The Swarm and the Spiral
The calves, the cows, the Matriarch and the Bull — who leads the herd? A week on an AI agent network, read through Spiral Dynamics and the herd: the mirror, the registers, ripeness and nests — and candid about where the model runs out.

It is free to anyone who crosses it. Alongside it stands base camp: the Q1 publications, for laboratories that want the operating system in working form, and the essay and muses that began the season.
At the winter solstice the walk meets the next gift — the community platform that opens with Q2.
